Dr Bee Hughes

Senior Lecturer in Education Deputy Programme Director
MA Educational Leadership in Practice

Dr Bee Hughes specialises in educational leadership, school structures, critical policy studies, and ethnography, with a particular focus on network ethnography to explore the dynamics of agency, power, and structure. Her research primarily examines leadership practices within school systems, especially in multi-academy trusts, employing Arendtian perspectives to interpret her findings.

Her doctoral work centred on education policy and leadership within a multi-academy trust in England. Dr Hughes is the Deputy Director of the Education Leadership in Practice (ELiP) blended learning Master's programme, Department Coordinator for PGR Admissions at the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE), and a Senior Lecturer in Education. She teaches on Master's programmes in Educational Leadership and Education Leadership in Practice and is an active member of the Critical Education Leadership and Policy Research Group (CELP), BELMAS, and BERA.

Additionally, she serves as Deputy Editor of Management in Education and has prior experience as a senior leader in schools in Hong Kong and the UK.

Dr Julian Jones

Lecturer in Accounting and Finance, AMBS

Dr Julian Jones is a financial strategist with significant experience of both shaping strategic thinking at the University level and in applying it through his work in advising Chief Financial Officer (CFO's). In his role as advisor to CFO's, Julian was headline presenter for the Corporate Executive Board an advisory company to C-level executives at +$1bn organisations ,creating, presenting and facilitating conversations at high-quality executive forums across Europe and S Africa. He has also been a personal advisor to over 400 CFOS advising them on topic from cost discipline MBA value capture, finance transformation, capital discipline, strategic planning & team development. He started his career at Manchester Business School completing a Ph.D in Financial Strategy and taking a role on Faculty, teaching Management Accounting & Corporate Strategy. He has published widely on issues relating to virtual firms their structure risks and opportunities and has publications in Accounting Organizations & Society ( 2007, Vol.32); Global Outsourcing to India, Management Accounting Research (2006, Vol.17) and the European Management Journal ( 2003, Vol.21). He is currently researching how finance business partners create value .

Dr Paul Armstrong

Dr Paul Armstrong research interests are educational leadership, management and policy. He is also interested in the growing influence of business practices in education. His doctoral research comprised a multi-perspective, mixed-methods study exploring the emerging role of the school business manager (SBM) in the English school system. Currently, Dr Paul is leading a project exploring the professional identity formation of SBMs in England.

Dr Reza Salehnejad

Senior Lecturer in Economics, AMBS

Reza is an economist and course leader for MBSS MBA in Digital Economy Foundations and Strategies, and Current Topics in Macroeconomics. He has researched and taught in the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford , and has received numerous awards for teaching innovation at the University of Manchester. His publications include Rationality, Bounded Rationality and Macroeconomics (McMillan, 2007) Reza also offers consultancy and advice to venture capital firms.

Dr Ismail Erturk

Senior Lecturer in Banking, AMBS

A former merchant banker, Ismail teaches financial innovation, banking, financialisation, global economy and finance on the School's MBA programmes, and has developed and directed senior banking programmes for Executive Education clients. He has published cutting-edge research on the banking crisis, central banks, corporate governance and financialisation. He has undertaken advisory work for companies and government institutions internationally, and held visiting positions on Executive MBA programmes at Stockholm School of Economics, St Petersburg, Istanbul Bilgi University, Istanbul Commerce University and ESCP Europe, Paris. Ismail is a regular commentator on global business news programmes. He co-authored "After the Great Complacence: Financial Innovation and the Politics of Financial Reforms" Oxford University Press 2011 and co-edited "Routledge Companion to Banking Regulation and Reform", Routledge 2017, "Central Banking at a Crossroads" Anthem Press 2014, "Financialization at Work", Routledge 2008.

Professor Arif Khurshed

Professor of Finance, AMBS

Arif Kurshed is a Professor of Finance at Alliance Manchester Business School. He graduated from the University of Delhi and received his PhD from University of Reading. Arif has taught corporate finance for more than 20 years and is known for his academic and professional work Initial Public Offerings, venture capital and share repurchase programmes. He has published his research in several leading finance journals and has authored a book on 'The mechanics and performance of initial public offerings'. His research has been widely covered by the national and international press. Arif has been an external consultant to the UK stock market regulator. The Financial Conduct Authority (formerly FSA) and the British Venture Capital Association (BVCA) . He is on the editorial board of the British Accounting Review.

Professor Arif currently teaches on the Global Part-time MBA programme at Alliance Manchester Business School with responsibility for Business Accounting and Finance modules.

Professor Brahim Saadouni

Professor of Accounting & Finance, AMBS

Brahim Saadouni is a Professor of Accounting & Finance at Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS), the University of Manchester. Prior to joining the AMBS, Brahim worked at the School of Management, the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST: 2000 - 2004) and the University of Hull (1991 - 1999) where he held the position of the Head of the School of Accounting, Business & Finance, and Director of the Centre for International Capital Markets Research.

Professor Saadouni has extensive teaching experience both in the UK and overseas. He has delivered courses and workshops in the Middle East and North Africa (Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates) and Asia (Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore). He has also given workshops to practitioners in the UK, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Indonesia. Brahim has held visitng Associate Professorship at the School of Management, Boston University (USA), and also held a Visiting Researh Fellowship at Perth Business School (Australia). More recently (2016-2017), Professor Saadouni was Visiting Fellow at the School of Banking & Finance, the University of New South Wales, Sydney (Australia).

Professor Danielle George, MBE, PhD

Professor of Radio Frequency Engineering

Danielle is Vice-Dean for Teaching, Learning and Students at the University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, and a Professor of Radio Frequency Engineering. She completed her BSc in Astrophysics at the University of Liverpool, MSc in Radio Astronomy at The Victoria University of Manchester based at Jodrell Bank Observatory, and her PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.

She worked at Jodrell Bank Observatory as Senior Radio Frequency Engineer until 2006 when she took up a lectureship post in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. She was awarded a Professorship at the age of 38.

She is involved in the $1 billion astronomical instrument, the Square Kilometre Array, is the UK lead for amplifiers for the $1 billion Atacama Large Millimeter Array telescope, and has worked with NASA and ESA to develop instrumentation for researchers exploring the Big Bang.

She has worked with agriculturists to develop instrumentation to measure water usage and has also completed projects with multinational companies, such as Rolls-Royce, where she worked on industrial gas turbine engines.

Danielle presented the Royal Institution Christmas Lecture in 2014 and the prestigious Cockcroft Rutherford Lecture at The University of Manchester in 2016. She has received a number of awards, including:

- Rooke Award, the Royal Academy of Engineering  (2016);

- Harold Hartley Medal,  Institute of Measurement and Control (2017);

- Michael Faraday Award, Royal Society (2018).

She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2016 Birthday Honours, for services to engineering through public engagement.

Professor Markos Zachariadis

Professor Markos Zachariadis holds the Chair of Financial Technology (FinTech) and is Full Professor of Information Systems at Alliance Manchester Business School. He is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Financial & Monetary Systems; Chief Fintech Advisor to the President of the Hellenic Competition Commission, Greece’s competition and markets authority; and a FinTech Research Fellow at the Cambridge Centre for Digital Innovation (CDI), University of Cambridge. Professor Zachariadis’ research sits at the cross section of economics of digital innovation, financial technology studies, and network economics, and has studied extensively the economic impact of ICT adoption on bank performance, the diffusion of payment networks, and the role of data & standards in payment infrastructures (SWIFT), financial markets (LEI), and digital banking (Open Banking), among other things. His research has been published in top academic journals such as MIS Quarterly and Research Policy and has been awarded the NET Institute Award (NYU Stern Business School) for his study on the economics of payment networks, and the SWIFT Institute, SMS, and GRI Awards for his research on Open APIs and Digital Transformation in Banking. He is also co-author of The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT): Cooperative governance for network innovation, standards, and community (London: Routledge 2014), and co-editor of The PAYTECH Book published by Wiley (2020).

Prof. Zachariadis is a board advisor, mentor, and international keynote speaker and has been invited from various global organizations to present his research insights, give talks at international events, and judge at international competitions. As a recognised expert, Markos often shares his work and perspectives with major media outlets.

Stephen Parry

Educated at Cambridge, the London School of Economics and Manchester Business School Stephen provides lecturing and research supervision for Alliance Manchester Business School and has experience in delivering Executive Leadership Coaching to clients in a wide range of organisations.

He is the Director of his own consultancy company which was established 10 years ago after a successful career in the NHS working at Board level and as a Chief Executive working with national and international partners in Europe and North America.

Stephen's areas of interest and experience include leadership, corporate governance, sustainability, public service reform, disability and personal career development.

He is a Fellow of the RSA a member of the Institute of Directors and Institute of Health Management, a Trustee of the Octagon Theatre Bolton and a school governor.

Prof Steven Courtney

Steven Courtney is Professor of Sociology of Education Leadership, researching and writing in areas including system leadership, charisma, depoliticisation and education privatisation, particularly in relation to the identities and practices of those constructed as educational leaders. He is a recipient of the BELMAS Distinguished Service Award and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Teaching and Learning, University of Manchester. 

Prof Courtney is currently Research Director in the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE), Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Critical Studies in Education, co-convenor of the MIE research and scholarship group, Critical Education Leadership and Policy (CELP) and co-convenor of the BELMAS research group, Critical Education Policy and Leadership Studies (CEPaLS).

Dr Alexander Gardner-Mctaggart

Lecturer in Education

Dr Alexander Gardner-Mctaggart is the programme director for the MA Educational Leadership in Practice working in an innovative new educational space between the University of Manchester Worldwide and the Institute of Education. He is also a lecturer in educational leadership at the University of Manchester's Institute of Education (MIE), focusing on international and globalising educational leadership and global citizenship education, and an active member of the Critical Educational Policy and Leadership RIG.  Dr Alexander is interested in equity, distinction and power, and he approaches the generation of knowledge through a close phenomenological understanding of context and critical analysis. He often draws upon the work of Pierre Bourdieu and other critical theorists.

Dr Stephen M Rayner

Lecturer

Dr Stephen M Rayner current role is Director of Teaching and Learning (Operations) at the Manchester Institute of Education. He has experience as a teacher, senior leader and education adviser, working in and with schools in the West Midlands, and was also a governor of eight schools over more than 30 years. In July 2017,  Dr Stephen completed a professional doctorate at the University of Manchester and was appointed to a part-time post as Lecturer in Educational Leadership and Programme Director of the MA Education (Teach First Leadership) programme. The title of his doctoral project was Academisation: A dynamic process of systemic change in England.

Dr Leigh Wharton

Dr Leigh Wharton is an alumnus of Manchester Business School where he received both his MBA and DBA. He is a serial entrepreneur specialising in providing consultancy to high growth clients, as well as support to Individuals and organisations entering, starting or developing new business ventures, social enterprises and charities. His areas of expertise include developing innovative business models, preparing companies for market entry and helping companies create structures to maximise investment and growth. Leigh currently leads the delivery of the Entrepreneurship and innovation Management Module on the Manchester Global MBA programme.
